What to avoid, and how it hides on a label
An apple grows its own wax. After washing, packers add a coat so it shines and keeps. The coating itself is food-grade; the trouble is what it seals in. Sprays applied before the coat are harder to wash off after it, and a rinse under the tap barely moves them.
What to prefer
The measured method. In a 2017 study, surface residues of two common orchard pesticides were gone after 12 to 15 minutes in a one percent baking soda solution; tap water and bleach did not manage it.
An apple that did not travel far did not need a coat to survive the trip.
Apples are among the most sprayed fruits. If you change one thing, change the one you eat every day.
The pick, honestly
Shine is a sales decision, not a freshness one. Choose by feel and smell, then soak. If the label says waxed, the soak matters more, not less.

If that is too much today
Loses fibre and the best of the flavour, but takes the coat and the surface residue with it. An honest second best.
